A team of material scientists, led by Professor Samson A. Jenekhe formerly of the University of Rochester's Department of Chemical Engineering, have developed a family of plastic electroluminescent devices.
This family of technologies has potential applications in more efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and solar cells, video displays, as well as other electronic devices, and is the subject of U.S. Patent 6,605,904.
Jenekhe's research was recently recognized by Thomson research company in its "Fast Moving Fronts," which identifies trends and growth areas within materials sciences and other disciplines.
His research is focused on one of the major challenge of developing plastic, or polymer-based, semiconductors ? to make efficient, high-performance semiconductors for use in applications where traditional polymer semiconductors fall short.
These high-performance semiconductors are called multicomponent organic semiconductors.
The challenge lies in that traditional electroluminescent polymer semiconductors do not have the ability to accept and transport both "electrons" and "holes" ? which limits the uses of the semiconductors.
Typically, electroluminescent polymer semiconductors fall into two categories ? "P-type" and "N-type."
Semiconductor material with extra electrons is called N-type material because it has extra negatively charged particles, whereas semiconductor material with extra holes is called P-type material because it has extra positively charged particles.Professor Jenekhe's research and often-cited papers provide insights on how to combine N-type and P-type polymers to form superior semiconductors that can be used in applications not possible with traditional materials.
This research could pave the way for the next generation of devices like flat panel computer monitors, televisions, fluorescent lighting, traffic lights, and other electronic products.???? ???Professor Jenekhe is currently a professor at University of Washington's Department of Chemical Engineering.????About CTC Upstate New York The Center for Technology Commercialization (CTC) is based in Westborough, MA, and serves as NASA's Northeast Regional Technology Transfer Center (RTTC), covering the six New England States plus New York and New Jersey.

Investment in Home Entertainment Continues to Skyrocket
Atlanta, GA (ContentDesk) March 16, 2006 -- Investments in home entertainment continue to skyrocket as many singles, couples and families prefer to spend more time at home for entertainment. Many consumers are investing thousands of dollars in home theater equipment including top of the line televisions and related equipment in hopes of being blown away by the sights and sounds filling their home theater or living room.Unfortunately, many of these same consumers begin to question their investment shortly after they install and begin using their expensive equipment.
The reality is, however, that many of these consumers are making the same mistake.
They are investing in high quality equipment but not investing in proper installation. There is no substitute for professional installation of cable systems,...
Beyond Flexibility - The Health Benefits Of Yoga
When I was 21 I suffered a slipped disc in my lower back. I couldn't sit down during the acute phase, only lie or stand, though standing itself was uncomfortable at the time. Once the acute phase had passed (with rest, although acupuncture and shiatsu are great), I had the fortune to meet some yoga teachers and I started going to their classes. I started out with Oki yoga, which is a Japanese form of yoga, and very good for healing the body.
I was given a series of correcting and strengthening exercises designed to improve my back and specific to the meridians that were in need of attention in my particular case. Oki yoga has postures classified on how they affect the meridians, which are like energetic pathways within our body.
And that was the one thing that helped restore my back completely, to a state that was actually better than it was before I injured myself. When you are suffering an acute injury though, yoga really shouldn't be attempted until that stage...

Plasma HDTV
Plasma televisions are based on a new technology that utilizes a unique display panel that alleviates the need for a cathode-ray picture tube. One of the major benefits of buying these televisions is that they are sized to accommodate new HDTV 16:9 aspect ratios and have a similar pixel resolution to a personal computer monitor. This provides the product the maximum picture clarity. In other words, a plasma display has an emissive flat panel display in which light is created by phosphors that are excited by a plasma discharge between two flat panels of glass. The gas discharge contains no mercury, but instead has a mixture of noble gases.
One of the basic things that the plasma screen does is illuminate the tiny colored fluorescent lights to form an image. Three fluorescent lights are red, green and blue, and constitute each pixel.
Plasma is stated to be the "Fourth State of Matter", after solid, liquid and gas. It is considered a distinct state of matter that contains...
Anam Cara Making sense of life
In Corrogue this Anam Cara or Soul Friend is coming to his senses. This morning it is a wet and windy Sunday morning. Each Sunday morning is an extended morning of rest. It is a morning of practice. I practice slowly coming to my senses. It is a morning in which I practice deep caring for the body and the soul.
This is a practice of awareness of the sensationalism of life moment to moment. We are beings of the senses. We make sense of our world via the senses. The senses are gateways. They keep us locked into a certain reality but they can be the medium of freedom from the limitation we call "our life." For too long religion has labelled the senses as something "not quite nice." For too long we have separated our senses as being something "not spiritual." Many of our religions have done the same with the sensational experience we call sex. As an Aman Cara I teach spirituality of the senses.
I teach what Van Morrison calls "A sense of wonder." An Anam Cara teaches you to honour...

What Is Hay Fever?
(NC)-Well, it's not caused by hay, and it isn't a fever. In fact, " hay fever" is a complete misnomer. The term was first used by English doctors over a hundred years ago when they noticed that during the hay-cutting season, some people suffered sneezing fits, runny noses and itchy eyes. The more accurate name for hay fever is seasonal allergic rhinitis. It's an allergic reaction that may cause a runny nose, red, itchy, watery eyes, pressure in the eyes, sore throat and headaches. Symptoms, in...
